How to care for professional hair scissors

Caring for professional hair scissors

Good scissors can serve a stylist for many years, but only with regular care. Most damage does not come from heavy use. It comes from small things: hair and moisture left on the blades, a dry pivot, loose tension, a pair left open on the edge of the station. Below is the routine KASHO recommends for its scissors. It works for any quality pair.

After every client: wipe the blades

Hair, water and product residue stay on the blades after each cut. Wipe them with a clean, soft cloth or a piece of leather – KASHO makes a leather cloth for exactly this. Clean blades keep their edge and finish for longer. Pay attention to the area around the pivot: cut hair collects there first.

Every day: oil the pivot

A drop of oil at the pivot keeps the blades moving smoothly. KASHO recommends doing this daily with its oil pen; KAI, the group behind KASHO, also allows a high-quality machine oil. Apply the oil where the blades meet at the screw, open and close the scissors a few times, then wipe off the excess.

Every day: check the tension

Tension is how firmly the blades are held together at the screw. If it is too loose, the blades fold hair instead of cutting it. If it is too tight, the blades wear faster and your hand gets tired sooner. KASHO advises checking it every day.

Different series use different screw systems, from a simple Flat Head Screw to the Disc Operation System, and they are adjusted in different ways. If you are not sure how your model adjusts, ask us before you turn the screw.

Storing and carrying your scissors

  • Store them closed, in a dry place.
  • Use a case or holder: it protects the blades from dirt and knocks at the station and on the way to work.
  • Keep them out of children’s reach.
  • Do not leave an open pair lying unprotected on a work surface, where it is easy to knock to the floor.

While you cut

  • Let the scissors do the work. They are made to cut cleanly without extra force or pressure.
  • Try not to catch the blades on combs, clips or slides: this scratches the blades and can nick the edge.
  • Keep them away from sterilising liquid, perm and colour solutions, which can corrode the steel. If the blades do come into contact with them, wipe and dry them straight away.

If a blade gets nicked

Stop using the scissors until they are repaired. Cutting with a nicked edge can damage the blades further. Sharpening and repair should only be done by the manufacturer or a service recommended by KAI: a precision tool needs precision service.

We do not sharpen scissors ourselves. We send them to the manufacturer’s service in Germany and get them back with the factory edge geometry. Warranty terms are on our Returns & Exchange page.

Quick checklist

  • After every client: wipe the blades
  • Every day: oil the pivot, check the tension
  • Always: store them closed, dry, in a case
  • Never: force, chemicals, knocking the blades on combs and clips, or cutting with a nicked edge
